IteroChat Now Brings AI Customer Support to Messenger and Instagram

Facebook Messenger and Instagram AI customer support is now live in IteroChat. Connect a Facebook Page and the same AI that answers on your website and WhatsApp answers Page messages and Instagram DMs too, from the same knowledge base, in whatever language your customer writes. Every conversation lands in one shared inbox, and your agents reply from the dashboard instead of Facebook or Instagram.

What is Messenger and Instagram AI customer support?

Messenger and Instagram AI customer support is the practice of answering customer messages sent to a Facebook Page or an Instagram professional account using an AI assistant grounded in your own help content, with a clear path to a human agent when the AI cannot help. In IteroChat, it works exactly like the website widget: the AI reads the incoming question, finds the relevant passage in your knowledge base, and replies in seconds. When a question is sensitive or the AI genuinely does not know the answer, it escalates to your team with the conversation history and a written summary attached. There is no separate bot to build, no second knowledge base to maintain, and no per-channel configuration to keep in sync.

Why social DMs belong in the same inbox

Most small teams already answer Facebook Page messages and Instagram DMs. The problem is where those messages live. They sit in Meta's own inboxes, or on someone's phone, outside the system where the rest of your support happens, which creates three predictable failures.

  • Nights and weekends go unanswered. A notification in a personal Facebook or Instagram app is not a support channel. Messages arriving at 11pm wait until morning.
  • Context is stranded. The customer who asked about a refund on Instagram is invisible to the agent handling their website chat.
  • Nothing is measurable. Volume, resolution rate, and response time on Messenger and Instagram never reach your reporting.

Putting Page messages and Instagram DMs in the same queue as website chat and WhatsApp fixes all three at once. It is the same AI, the same knowledge base, and the same team view, no matter which channel the message came from.

How the AI answers on Messenger and Instagram

The AI follows your existing workspace settings: your knowledge base, your instructions, and your escalation rules. You configure them once and every channel obeys them. Answers come back in under two seconds, day or night.

Language handling matters more in social DMs than on a website, because people write the way they speak. IteroChat detects how someone is actually writing and replies in the same language and register, including code-mixed writing such as Banglish and Hinglish. There is no translation layer to configure and no per-language bot to maintain. You can read more in multilingual AI support.

If you would rather a particular Page or Instagram account stay human-only, you can turn AI answers off for that connection alone. Every other connection keeps working as before.

When does the AI hand off to a human?

The AI escalates when a conversation needs judgment rather than information: a refund, a payment problem, account access, or an explicit request for a person. You control these triggers in AI configuration.

On handoff, the AI sends a short holding reply in the customer's language, writes a plain-English summary, and alerts your team. An agent claims the conversation from the shared queue and replies using the same composer they use for website chat, with the full history already in front of them. The customer never repeats themselves and never notices a system boundary. This is the same human handoff model IteroChat has always used, now extended to Messenger and Instagram.

What agents can see and send

Messenger and Instagram conversations are not a degraded version of website chat. They carry the media and delivery signals your team needs.

  • Inbound media. Customers can send images, audio, and documents, and your agents can open them in the transcript. Files that are still loading show a pending state; files that fail show a failed state so you know to ask for a resend.
  • Outbound attachments. Agents can attach images, videos, audio, and documents from the composer. Delivery follows what that channel allows for each media type.
  • Delivery status. Every message your team or the AI sends shows whether it was accepted, delivered, and read, with a failed state if delivery does not succeed.
  • Returning customers. When someone messages from a profile you have spoken to before, the conversation header can show that they are a returning customer along with their Messenger or Instagram contact details.

Conversations are marked with a Messenger or Instagram channel badge, and you can filter the queue by channel or by a specific connected Page or account. Claiming, transferring, and resolving work the same way as website chat; see handling conversations. Full channel details are in the Messenger channel and Instagram channel documentation.

Which channels are live today

ChannelStatusWhat it does
Website widgetLiveAnswers visitors on the page they are already on, via one script tag.
WhatsAppLiveAnswers your WhatsApp Business number through the official WhatsApp Business Platform.
MessengerLiveAnswers Facebook Page messages in the same shared inbox.
InstagramLiveAnswers Instagram DMs through a linked professional account.

Messenger and Instagram on the same Facebook Page

Connecting a Facebook Page can bring both channels online at once, but they stay separate in IteroChat. Messenger and Instagram for the same Page are two connections and two inbox threads. A customer who writes on both gets two conversations, so your team can see which channel they used. Disconnecting the Page removes both; disconnecting only Instagram leaves Messenger in place.

The reply window

This is a platform rule rather than an IteroChat limitation, and it is worth understanding before you connect a Page. Messenger and Instagram only allow free-form replies for a limited time after the customer's last message.

While that window is open, your team replies from the composer as normal. Once it closes, the composer tells you that a free-form reply cannot be sent, and the customer must message you again to reopen the conversation. The practical guidance is simple: if a customer goes quiet and the window closes, wait for their next message and continue in the same thread.

How to connect a Facebook Page

  1. Open Settings → Integrations in your IteroChat dashboard.
  2. Choose Connect Facebook Page and sign in to grant the Page or Pages you want to use.
  3. Include any linked Instagram professional account in the same step. Instagram messaging works through a Facebook Page: the account must be professional (business or creator) and already linked to that Page.
  4. Name each connection something your team will recognise, such as "Support" or "Brand Instagram".
  5. Decide whether the AI answers on that connection, or whether messages wait for a person.

Only owners and admins can connect or manage a Page. Agents see and reply to Messenger and Instagram conversations in the queue like any other chat. You can connect more than one Page, and each connection is managed separately, including its own AI on/off setting.

Messenger and Instagram for the same Page appear as separate connections and as separate threads in the inbox. Disconnecting the Page removes both. If you only want to stop Instagram, disconnect the Instagram connection. If your website widget is not live yet, the quickstart guide takes about five minutes.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Does IteroChat use the official Facebook Page connect flow?

Yes. You connect through Connect Facebook Page in Settings → Integrations, using the official Facebook Login for Business flow rather than an unofficial bridge.

Do I need a separate knowledge base for Messenger or Instagram?

No. Both channels use the same knowledge base as your website widget and WhatsApp. Update your content once and every channel uses the new information immediately, with no redeployment.

Can I connect more than one Facebook Page?

Yes. You can connect multiple Pages, rename each connection, check whether it is healthy, and turn AI answers on or off per Page. Disconnect any Page when you no longer want it linked.

Can I turn the AI off and use Messenger or Instagram for live chat only?

Yes. Turning AI answers off for a connection means new messages from that Page or Instagram account wait for a person instead, while your other connections carry on unchanged.

What do I need before connecting Instagram?

The Instagram account must be a professional account (business or creator), and it must already be linked to the Facebook Page you plan to connect. Instagram is not a separate connect button; it is included when you connect that Page.

What happens when the reply window closes?

The composer will tell you that a free-form reply cannot be sent. The customer needs to message you again to reopen the window, and you then continue in the same thread.

Do Messenger and Instagram conversations appear in my reporting?

Yes. Those conversations land in the same queue as website chat and WhatsApp, so they flow into the same metrics, sentiment analysis, and topic trends as every other channel.
