Accounts & organizations

Accounts vs organizations

Iterochat keeps two things separate: your account and your organizations.

Your account is you: your name, your email, and your password. There's exactly one account per person, no matter how many teams you work with.

An organization is a workspace. It holds a widget, a knowledge base, a team, and the conversations those produce.

  • One account can belong to several organizations at once.
  • Each organization gives you its own role.
  • When you sign in, you sign in as your account, then work inside one organization at a time.

Your account is shared across every organization you belong to, so the two layers behave differently:

  • Account-level things (your password, your email) are the same everywhere.
  • Organization-level things (your role, your availability) are per-organization.

Creating an account

Starting fresh takes three steps:

  1. Sign up. Go to the sign-up page and enter your name, email, and a password (at least 8 characters). This creates your account. It doesn't create an organization yet.
  2. Verify your email. Iterochat emails you a verification link. Open it to confirm the address. The sign-up screen waits for this and moves on by itself once you've clicked the link, even if you opened it in another tab. The link is good for 48 hours. If it expires, sign in and use Resend verification email.
  3. Create or join an organization. After verifying, you land on the workspace setup screen. You have two options:
    • Create a new organization by giving it a name. You become its owner.
    • If someone has already invited you, accept that invitation instead.

You have to verify your email before you can create an organization. If you try sooner, Iterochat asks you to confirm your address first and offers to resend the link.

Signing in

Sign in with your account email and password. Where you go next depends on how many organizations you belong to:

  • No organizations yet: you're taken to the workspace setup screen to create your first organization (or accept a pending invitation).
  • One organization: you go straight into it.
  • More than one: you're asked to pick which organization to open.

Once you're inside the dashboard, the organization switcher in the sidebar lets you move between your organizations without signing out. It also has a Create organization option if you want to start a new workspace from there.

Password reset

If you've forgotten your password:

  1. On the sign-in screen, choose Forgot password? and enter your email.
  2. Iterochat emails you a reset link. For privacy, the confirmation message is the same whether or not an account exists for that address, so no one can use this to discover who has an account.
  3. Open the link and set a new password. The reset link is valid for one hour.

Because your password belongs to your account, resetting it changes the password for every organization you belong to. There's only one password to remember.

Didn't get the email? Check your spam folder, and make sure you used the same address you signed up with. Reset links expire after an hour, so request a fresh one if it's been a while.

Accepting an invite

When a teammate invites you to their organization, you receive an email with an invitation link. What happens when you open it depends on whether you already have an Iterochat account:

  • New to Iterochat: the invite page asks you to set your name and a password (at least 8 characters). That creates your account and joins the organization in one step, and you land in the dashboard.
  • You already have an account: sign in (or, if you're already signed in, just confirm), and the organization is added to your account.

Each invitation is tied to a specific email address and the role your teammate chose for you. Invitation links expire after 7 days. If yours has expired or was already used, ask your team to send a new one.

Whoever invited you doesn't set your password: you choose it yourself when you accept. To manage teammates and roles, see Team & roles.
